Do you offer Sign Language Classes?
Yes, every Spring and Fall we offer Sign
Language Classes for the hearing community. Our classes start at the
Beginning level and progress through to Advanced level. Occasionally we offer
specialized classes in Religion, Music, etc. based upon the needs of our
students.

Where can I get an interpreter?
DHHS is an interpreter referral agency. There is a charge for this service. For more information please see our Interpreting Rates Page or call 717.397.4741

How can I become an interpreter?
There are several ways to become an interpreter.
Many interpreters are CODAs (Children of Deaf Adults). Others have gone to an
interpreter training school such as Philadelphia Community College or Bloomsburg
University. I would suggest contacting a High School Career Center to find out
about schools in your area.

Do I need to be licensed or certified to interpret for the
Deaf?
Act 57 requires that all paid interpreters be certified and registered with the state of
Pennsylvania. We are obligated by this law to contract only with certified
interpreters UNLESS the Deaf client specifies a non-certified interpreter.
Non-certified interpreters can interpret for churches and volunteer situations.
